Photo Prompt 6 - January Challenge

To begin, I'm not really sure how this piece was inspired by the photo below, but it felt really nice to write out my feelings a bit. Hope you enjoy!

She felt shattered. They thought she was made of stone. Her mother told her people who care too much often end up cold, heartless. She wanted to be free. They wanted her to remain a prisoner forever.

She always saw the world as if it were separated from here by crystal clear waters, reflecting the image of what she dreamed to be. Only she didn't believe she could swim.

You see, They always liked to project their pride and their accomplishments and throw them at her like stones. (Even though their success was not achieved by their own hands) The prize is all that matters They said. She was stripped of her confidence when they told her she would never be a winner.

They said she was never happy enough. They said she was easily provoked. They pointed out her flaws like They were dissecting her piece by piece, not caring that she felt every wound They inflicted with their words.

She let Them distort her image. She let Them rob her of her piece. She let their flaunting and boasting cloud her mind with Their filth. Until one day, she was ready to breathe on her own again.

She dipped her toes into the waters that separated her from Them. She found it to be lukewarm, like They were, always hot for the glory, but cold when it came down to working to maintain it. She saw, as she broke the binds They tied her with (worthless, negative, petty), Their true reflection (ignorance, selfishness, deceitful).

She learned that her flaws were part of he because here strengths required that, but when They fail to look past all that she's not, it's not a reflection of who she is, but who They are afraid to be. It's easy to make someone feel inferior, useless, pathetic when They are fuel by those things Themselves.

When she stepped out and chose to fight Them, they drowned in their ignorance. They suffocated in their selfishness. They died in there own deceit. She reigned victorious after all, and in heart knew They would be but shadows of her past.
